Hardware wallet security starts with the purchase

Market Filter highlights hardware wallet sales in questionable Telegram channels. Why checking the seller and buying through official channels matters, even when the device is delivered directly to you.

At Market Filter, we have noticed offers to sell hardware wallets in questionable Telegram channels. We want to draw your attention to these listings: when buying a device to store cryptocurrency, it matters where it came from and who may have had access to it.

A recognised brand and neat packaging alone do not answer those questions.

What can happen before the purchase

Hardware wallets are designed to keep private keys offline. This reduces the risks of online attacks, but the device itself still makes a physical journey from the manufacturer to its owner.

If an attacker gains access to a wallet along the way, they may tamper with its hardware. For example, an additional module inside the device can capture the recovery phrase shown on its screen and transmit it to attackers.

This does not always require changes to the firmware. A successful software check therefore does not rule out hidden physical tampering.

Where we recommend buying

Our recommendation to readers is to buy hardware wallets only through official channels:

- Whenever possible, order directly from the manufacturer's official store.

- If buying from a reseller, check their current status on the manufacturer's list of authorised sellers. A claim to be an “official partner” on Telegram is not enough.

- If the seller offers it, choose home delivery with the parcel handed directly to you.

The last point helps you control receipt of your order. However, courier delivery does not confirm the device's authenticity or rule out tampering before dispatch. Checking the seller remains essential.

Please approach Telegram offers carefully and avoid making a decision based solely on a channel's appearance or its administrator's assurances.

Why we are not linking to the channels

We deliberately do not publish links to questionable channels, so we do not give them extra exposure or direct our readers towards potentially unsafe sellers. A warning should not become a source of new customers for possible scammers.

A Telegram listing alone does not prove fraud. But if the device's origin and the seller's status cannot be verified, we recommend avoiding the purchase and using an official supplier.

When choosing a hardware wallet, pay attention both to the model and to who you are buying it from.

Our Methodology

Every channel in the catalogue is checked by the editors against one method: it is how we work out the rating, place a channel at a risk level and decide whether it belongs in Market Scam.
